A GPT tool deployed by the US government further facilitates and normalises fascism

The US Army has adopted an artificial intelligence tool called ‘CamoGPT’ to systematically remove and exclude references to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) from its training materials. This initiative aligns with an executive order from President Trump, signed on January 27th, titled Restoring America’s Fighting Force, which mandates the elimination of policies perceived as promoting “un-American, divisive, discriminatory, radical, extremist, and irrational theories” concerning race and gender.

CamoGPT, developed by the US Army’s AI center (AI2C), is used by thousands of employees for tasks ranging from developing army training programmes to producing multilingual translations. In this new context, the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) employs CamoGPT to scan and modify documents, ensuring compliance with the executive order. This includes purging language that promotes diversity, reinforcing a dangerous trend of rewriting history and silencing marginalised voices. This AI-driven censorship mirrors broader dangerous attacks on DEIA initiatives in education, workplaces, and public institutions, aiming to dismantle hard-fought progress in human rights justice.

By removing DEIA content, the US further deepens and normalises institutional racism, sexism, and ableism (let us not forget the ‘A’ in DEIA) by reinforcing structures of power that benefit a white supremacist ideology. Used without any ethical oversight or constraints, CamoGPT is one of many tools used by the Trump administration to amass fascist control and further exemplifies the administration’s road to (digital) authoritarianism.
