Racist Technology in Action: Using AI to manipulate migration data (anonymously)

A Dutch anonymous site uses AI to spread misinformation about migration in the Netherlands.

Often the racist consequences of technology are an unfortunate (and often unintended) reflection of the structural racism in our societies, or a result of sloppiness, or lack of care. But technology can also be used for explicitly racist purposes. In the case of nederlandinbeeld.org, as a disgusting catalyst for misinformation about migration in the Netherlands.

DutchNews has a good write-up of the tricks that this anonymous site uses to manipulate the data. It skews the housing and crime figures, for example, and it uses a large language model to read court decisions and – undoubtedly illegally – infer the ethnicity of the defendants. Its combined data map even confabulates a racist “quietness index” for municipalities, based on migration-related data.
